- Can I get a sample of the desktop before I purchase the desk, to make sure that it matches with my office?

- Do you protect or seal your desktops?
Yes, not only do we construct our desktops with high-quality European E1-level adhesives, we seal them all with a UV-cured protective coating that doesn't off-gas or emit VOCs.
- How should I clean and care for my desktop?
Take a look at the Proper Care & Use of your UPLIFT Desktop page.
- Do solid wood desktops require any maintenance?
If the air in your area is especially dry, your wood desktop could be at increased risk of cracking and splitting. Wood contracts in very dry environments, leaving it vulnerable to cracking and warping. If you live in a very dry environment (Las Vegas, Denver, Salt Lake City, etc) and your desktop does crack, contact us so we can send you a repair kit to fill the affected areas. Simply sending you a replacement desktop will likely result in the same cracking due to the dry environment. See the solid wood desktop repair kit instructions (pdf).
If you live in a very dry area and potentially repairing your wood desktop isn't something you're comfortable with, we recommend that you take a look at our Bamboo, Eco, or Laminate desktops.
Please contact us if you have additional questions.
- How durable is solid wood?
Regardless of the species, 1.75" thick solid wood desktops are very durable and will even harden over time. However, these surfaces can become scratched and require maintenance for longevity. If you live in a very dry climate, you will need to keep your desk hydrated with lemon oil. Otherwise the wood may dry out and form small cracks. See our Desktop Care Kits for desktop maintenance options.
- Will the desktop surface be smooth?
With the exception of some naturally beautiful and expected imperfections such as minor knot holes and hairline cracks, your solid wood desk will be sanded, finished, and smooth. Woodworkers add filler to these minor defects and sand everything smooth before applying the top coat.
- Will the bottom surface of the desktop look as nice as the top surface?
While your custom desktop will be manufactured from solid pieces of the same wood species on both sides, the bottom surface may include cosmetic defects such as minor cracks that do not affect structure or performance, blemishes, etc. Sourcing material that is equally pristine on both sides of the desktop would be extremely cost prohibitive.
- Can I order a custom size?
Absolutely! Every custom solid wood desktop is made to your specifications for width and depth once you place your order. Contact us for a quote. Tell us how wide you want the desk to be and we'll cut it to within a 0.25" tolerance. Please note that we recommend a width from 42" to 80", for proper frame support.
Our solid wood desktops sometimes have a slight variance either over or under the selected dimensions because of the nature of the wood. We reject any variances over 1/4", but below that amount (either over or under) is within our accepted margin.
- How can I feel good about chopping down a tree for my custom desktop?
We've partnered with the National Forest Foundation to plant five trees in U.S. national forests for every solid wood desktop we sell. You can rest easier knowing that these new trees will help beautify our national parks.
- Why is the lead time so long?
These desktops are not mass produced. Each desktop is custom made to your exact specifications by our skilled woodworkers once you place your order. Wood is then sourced, dried, prepared, cut, and formed into a larger panel before being cut to your precise measurements. This is followed by the addition of grommet holes and desk attachment pre-drilled holes and threaded inserts. Lastly, your new desktop is finished with multiple coats of stain and/or clear lacquer finish, cured, inspected, packed, and sent to you.
- I really don't want to wait, but I also don't want to compromise on getting a solid wood desk. Are there any other options?
Yes, we stock solid wood desktops in various species and five standard widths from 42" to 80" as well as 24" and 30" deep options. These desktops have been crafted by our woodworkers and are ready and waiting in the warehouse. That means we can get them to you quickly! You will just have to choose from the sizes and species we have available in stock. See our UPLIFT Standing Desk page for those options and more.
- I just received my desk and the color of the wood looks a little off. Are you sure that this is the wood I ordered?
The color difference you're seeing is a result of natural variations in the wood. Different wood species can also get a little lighter or a little darker as they age.
- Is a solid wood desktop the right choice for me?
If you are in the market for a one-of-a-kind natural desktop that reflects the untamed, pure habitat in which it grew, then solid wood is for you. However, if you prefer a desktop with uniform lines, finish, pattern, and color, you may prefer a laminate, bamboo, or eco curve desktop.
